Nsukka Decries Inhuman Marginalisation In Enugu, Vows To Retain 2023 Governorship
A group identified as the Igbo Nsukka United Front (INUF) has taken an inventory of the distribution of projects and resources in Enugu State and returned with a verdict that the people of Enugu North, otherwise known as the Nsukka Cultural Zone, have been terribly shortchanged in a state they constitute over 60 per cent of the demographics.
While pointing out that Nsukkaland has suffered the worst form of marginalization in the allocation of Enugu State resources, they regretted the Enugu North was only able to produce the State Governor in Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi when his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was not in power at the federal level.
This, the group noted, has encumbered their son from attracting the much-needed federal presence in Nsukkaland to balance the array of projects in Enugu East and Enugu West senatorial zones.
AllNews reports that this emerged on Saturday during the inauguration of local government and ward coordinators of the front in Nsukka where the Front demanded the retention of the Enugu State governorship seat in Enugu North during the 2023 general election.
Addressing the gathering, the INUF National Secretary, Barrister Ogbuja Ogbu said, “It is public knowledge that Igbo Nsukka has over 64% of the population of Enugu State but how a people who are the majority with so much human and material resources can be greatly marginalized and systematically underdeveloped is baffling.
“Enugu East Senatorial Zone with less than 20% of the population has the following institutions:
1) The Enugu State Government House
2) All The Federal and State Ministries
3) All the Federal and State Parastatals and Agencies
4) Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu
5) All the Campuses of Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
6) University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus
7) Esut Teaching Hospital, Parklane
8) Enugu State College of Education Technical (ESCET)
9) Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital
10) Federal Orthopedic Hospital
11) School of Dental Studies,
12) University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital
13) All the Major Markets
14) Emene Industrial Layout
15) Akanu Ibiam International Airport
16) Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium
17) Nigeria Law School Agbani
18) National Open University, Trans-Ekulu Enugu
18) Federal Collage of Education Eha-Amufu and many others.
“While In Enugu West Senatorial Zone with less than 16% of the population
has the following :
1) The Coca Cola Depot Ngwo
3) Nigeria Breweries Ama
4) Federal Road safety Academy, Udi
5) Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo
6) Police College, Oji River.
7) College of Health and Tech, Oji River
8) Oji River Dam
9) Enugu State University of Education, Awgu
10) NYSC Orientation Camp amongst others.
“Then ladies and gentlemen, when it comes Nsukka land in Enugu North Senatorial Zone which has over 64% of the state population, we have only half of University of Nigeria, Nsukka and nothing more!
“We do not even have upto one full fledged institution, while Enugu East Senatorial Zone has 19 & more and Enugu West Senatorial Zone has 10 & more institutions.
“As a matter of fact, the major faculties of University of Nigeria Nsukka are all situated in Enugu Campus of Enugu East Senatorial Zone such as faculty of Law, Medicine, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Nursing, and others.
“This level of marginalization is not only unfair but inhuman. This is coupled with the fact that not even a single soul from Nsukka has ever been made the Vice Chancellor of UNN having qualified for it on several occasions.
“To further drive this home, during the tenure of Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani as governor, Enugu East had both the Senate President, Sen. Ken Nnamani and the Minister, Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr. They pulled forces together and developed their place, carefully excluding Isi-Uzo local government in their plans.
“The case was the same during the tenure of Barr. Sullivan Chime. Both the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremmadu, Hon Minister Njeze, Hon Minister Prof. Chinedu Nebo and UNN Vice Chancellor, Prof Bertho Okolo all joined hands to develop and empower their zone.
“However, when it came to the turn of Enugu North, the only man-standing is Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He alone is left to do the whole work of Development and Empowerment of Igbo Nsukka at a time his party is not the ruling party, thereby leaving Enugu North with almost nothing!”
While asserting that “never again shall Nsukka be given given a back seat when we are the majority”, INUF declared that “We are to rightfully demanding to retain the position of Enugu State Governor come 2023” and that “Never again shall Nsukka be sidelined in deciding her own destiny!”
